The Concept
Chasing treeverb
Outsider Recordings began as a five-month project to build a fully mobile, off-grid recording setup — a dream that traces back to my high school recording classes, where I dreamed of capturing the sound of "treeverb."
The debut session was recorded over a weekend at a dispersed campsite near Salmon la Sac, on the sunny side of the Cascades, with Fine Arts (Dillon Sturtevant) and Olivia White. A control room was set up inside a van, and the band tracked everything outdoors — trading the usual studio fight against HVAC hum and passing traffic for the sound of a nearby creek, wind through the trees, nighthawks, and crickets. Electric guitar overdubs were later recorded outdoors at Seward Park to keep the whole song true to the concept.
The result, "Caterpillar Hill," was written and performed by Dillon Sturtevant, with additional performances by Olivia White and Ben, mixed by Ben and mastered by Nich Wilbur. The accompanying video was shot on Super 8 and edited by Dillon.
